Lesson 1

NEBUCHADNEZZAR'S TROUBLED SPIRIT
Part I

7/4/70

MEMORY GEM:". . . he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: he revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him." – Daniel 2:21, 22.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 2:1-11; Prophets and Kings, pages 491-496.

INTRODUCTION:"God has revealed in His law the principles that underlie all true prosperity both of nations and of individuals. 'This is your wisdom and your understanding,' Moses declared. . . 'It is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life.'. . . The blessings thus assured to Israel are, on the same conditions and in the same degree, assured to every nation and every individual under the broad heavens. God exalted Babylon that it might fulfill this purpose. But the king failed of recognizing the power that had exalted him." – Education, pages 174, 175.

1.
WHY WAS NEBUCHADNEZZAR TROUBLED AND SLEEPLESS? Dan. 2:1.

NOTE --- "Soon after Daniel and his companions entered the service of the king of Babylon, events occurred that revealed to an idolatrous nation the power and faithfulness of the God of Israel. Nebuchadnezzar had a remarkable dream, by which 'his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.' But although the king's mind was deeply impressed, he found it impossible, when he awoke, to recall the particulars." – Prophets and Kings, page 491.

2.
UPON WHOM DID HE CALL FOR HELP? Dan. 2:2.

NOTE --- "A most interesting and important history is given in Daniel 2. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, dreamed a dream which he could not bring to his remembrance when he awoke. 'Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans,' those whom he had exalted and upon whom he depended, and relating the circumstances, demanded that they should tell him the dream. The wise men stood before the king in terror: for they had no ray of light in regard to his dream." – Fundamentals of Christian Education, page 410.

3.

WHAT DID THE CHALDEANS NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THEY COULD INTERPRET THE DREAM? Dan. 2:3,4.

4

Lesson 1, page 2

NOTE --- "The king knew that if they could really tell the interpretation, they could tell the dream as well. The Lord had in His providence given Nebuchadnezzar this dream, and had caused the particulars to be forgotten, while the fearful impression was left upon his mind, in order to expose the pretensions of the wise men of Babylon." – The Sanctified Life, page 26.

4.
HOW DID THE KING THREATEN THE CHALDEANS? Dan. 2:5.

5.

WHAT REWARD WOULD BE GIVEN IF THEY GAVE A CORRECT INTERPRETATION? Dan. 2:6.

NOTE --- "Dissatisfied with their evasive answer, and suspicious because, despite their pretentious claims to reveal the secrets of men, they nevertheless seemed unwilling to grant him help, the king commanded his wise men, with promises of wealth and honor on the one hand, and threats of death on the other, to tell him not only the interpretation of the dream, but the dream itself." – Prophets and Kings, page 492.

6.
HOW DID THE CHALDEANS AGAIN ANSWER THE KING? Dan. 2:7.

NOTE --- "Filled with fear for the consequences of their failure, the magicians endeavored to show the king that his request was unreasonable, and his test beyond that which had ever been required of any man." – Ibid., p. 492.

7.
WHAT REPLY DID THE KING THEN MAKE? Dan. 2:8,9.

NOTE --- "The monarch was very angry, and threatened that they should all be slain if, in a given time, the dream was not made known." – S.L., p. 26.

8.
WHAT ANSWER DID THE WISE MEN GIVE THE KING? Dan. 2:10,11.

NOTE --- "Let us... consider the kings of Babylon and Egypt. The kings of those ancient lands gave their wise men... the opportunity baited with rich reward for interpreting the visions, which we now find in the Bible. . . Their wise men failed and even openly and wisely admitted that to reveal the secret things of God was not their business." – Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 24, page 16.

"Today private interpretations have harmed and confused the world more than at any other time. . . Who can say that their diverse interpretations of the Scriptures are inspired, dependable, or profitable for anything but to cause Christians to quarrel and bicker among themselves over theories and doctrines of men?" – Ibid., page 17.

Lesson 2

NEBUCHADNEZZAR'S TROUBLED SPIRIT
Part II

7/11/70

MEMORY GEM:"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." – Amos 3:7.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 2:12-23; Prophets and Kings, pages 491-496.

INTRODUCTION:"You recall that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had a night vision but had no interpreter, no, not one among all his wise men in the kingdom. Consequently as they were unable to interpret his vision. . . it was decreed that they should be put to death, and they would have perished if Daniel, God's man, had not been in the land to interpret the king's vision." – Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 24, page 14.

1.

WHOM DID THE OFFICERS SEEK TO BE SLAIN AND WHAT WAS DANIEL'S APPEAL? Dan. 2:12-16.

NOTE --- "Among those sought for by the officers who were preparing to fulfill the provisions of the royal decree, were Daniel and his friends. When told that according to the decree they also must die. . . Daniel inquired of Arioch 'Why is the decree so hasty from the king?' Arioch told him the story of the king's perplexity over his remarkable dream, and of his failure to secure help from those in whom he has hitherto placed fullest confidence. Upon hearing this, Daniel, taking his life in his hands, ventured into the king's presence, and begged that time be granted, that he might petition his God to reveal to him the dream and its interpretation. To this request the monarch acceded." – Prophets and Kings, page 493.

2.

TO WHOM DID DANIEL AND HIS COMPANIONS APPEAL FOR HELP? Dan. 2:17,18.

NOTE --- "Together they sought for wisdom from the Source of light and knowledge. Their faith was strong in the consciousness that God had placed them where they were, that they were doing His work and meeting the demands of duty. In times of perplexity and danger they had always turned to Him for guidance and protection, and He had proved an ever-present help. Now with contrition of heart they submitted themselves anew to the Judge of the earth, pleading that He would grant them deliverance in this their time of special need. And they did not plead in vain." – Ibid., pages 493, 494.

Lesson 2, page 2

3.
HOW DID GOD REVEAL THE SECRET OF THE DREAM? Dan. 2:19.

4.
WHO IS IT THAT REMOVETH KINGS AND SETTETH THEM UP? Dan. 2:21.

NOTE --- "In the annals of human history, the growth of nations, the rise and fall of empires, appear as if dependent on the will and prowess of man; the shaping of events seems, to a great degree, to be determined by his power, ambition, or caprice. But in the word of God the curtain is drawn aside, and we behold, above, behind, and through all the play and counterplay of human interest and power and passions, the agencies of the All-merciful One, silently, patiently working out the counsels of His own will." – Ibid., pp. 499, 500.

5.

WITH WHAT WORDS DID DANIEL PRAISE GOD FOR ANSWERED PRAYER? Dan. 2:20-23.

NOTE --- "Daniel's first act was to thank God for the revelation given him." – Ibid., page 494.

"A congregation may be the poorest in the land. It may be without the attraction of any outward show; but if the members possess the principles of the character of Christ, they will have His joy in their souls. Angels will unite with them in worship. The praise and thanksgiving from grateful hearts will ascend to God as a sweet oblation." – C.O.L., page 298.

"Those who in heaven join with the angelic choir in their anthem of praise must learn on earth the song of heaven, the keynote of which is thanksgiving." – Testimonies, Vol. 7, page 244.

6.
UPON WHOM ARE WE INVITED TO CALL WHEN IN TROUBLE? Ps. 50:15.

NOTE --- "The Lord says, 'Call upon Me in the day of trouble.' Ps. 50:15. He invites us to present to Him our perplexities and necessities, and our need of divine help. He bids us be instant in prayer. As soon as difficulties arise, we are to offer to Him our sincere, earnest petitions. By our importunate prayers we give evidence of our strong confidence in God. The sense of our need leads us to pray earnestly, and our heavenly Father is moved by our supplications . . . . The children of God are not left alone and defenseless. Prayer moves the arm of Omnipotence. Prayer has 'subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire. '. . . 'turned to flight the armies of the aliens.' " – Christ's Object Lessons, page 172.

Lesson 3

THE KING'S DREAM
Part I

7/18/70

MEMORY GEM:"... there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known. . . what shall be in the latter days." – Dan. 2:28. Read Dan. 2:34.

STUDY HELP:Daniel 2:24-30.

INTRODUCTION:"While Daniel clung to God with unwavering trust, the spirit of prophetic power came upon him. While honored by men with the responsibilities of the court and the secrets of the kingdom, he was honored by God as His ambassador, and taught to read the mysteries of ages to come. Heathen monarchs, through association with Heaven's representative, were constrained to acknowledge the God of Daniel." – Education, page 56.

*  *  *

1.
WHO WAS A SAVOUR OF LIFE UNTO LIFE? Dan. 2:24.

NOTE --- "Through Daniel God saved the life of all the wise men of Babylon. And those deliverances are as object lessons; they illustrate the spiritual blessings offered to the world through connection with the God whom Joseph and Daniel worshipped. Every one in whose heart Christ abides, every one who will show forth His love to the world, is a worker together with God for the blessing of humanity." – Acts of the Apostles, page 13.

2.
WHY WAS DANIEL IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME? Dan. 2:25.

NOTE --- "When you . . . make the Kingdom of God your chief interest, then you will most surely find yourself in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing and reaping God's richest blessing. You can then rest assured that He will open the way and take you where you need to be even if He has to lift you out of the well, and to tell the lshmaelites to carry you into Egypt and to put you working in Potiphar's house. He may even have to take you into prison before He seats you with Pharaoh on the throne. Or He may cause you to run away from Egypt and have you keep sheep around Mt. Horeb. He may bring you against the Red Sea while the Egyptians are pursuing you. He may bring you into the desert where there is neither water nor food . . . . Yes, hundreds and thousands of things may happen, but he that trusts in God and does His work well shall find all these so-called hindrances or mishaps wonderful deliverances, and avenues to success, all carrying out

Lesson 3, page 2

God's marvelous plans, and God's way toward your promotion from one great thing to another." – Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 35, pages 28, 29.

3.
WHAT URGENT QUESTION DID THE KING ASK DANIEL? Dan. 2:26.

4.
TO WHOM DID DANIEL DIRECT THE KING'S THOUGHTS? Dan. 2:27,28.

NOTE --- "The Jewish captive stands before the monarch of the most powerful empire the sun has ever shone upon. The king is in great distress amid all his riches and glory; but the youthful exile is peaceful and happy in his God. Now, if ever, is the time for Daniel to exalt himself, to make prominent his own goodness and superior wisdom. But his first effort is to disclaim all honor for himself, and to exalt God as the source of all wisdom." – The Sanctified Life, page 27.

5.

IN WHAT TIME WERE THE THINGS SEEN IN THE DREAM TO TAKE PLACE? Dan. 2:28,29.

NOTE --- "The historic events related in the king's dream were of consequence to him; but the dream was taken from him, that the wise men by their claimed understanding of mysteries, should not place upon it a false interpretation. The lessons taught in it were given by God for those who live in our day. The inability of the wise men to tell the dream, is a representation of the wise men of the present day, who have not discernment and learning and knowledge from the Most High, and therefore are unable to understand the prophecies." – Fundamentals of Christian Education, page 412.

"The whole image of a man represented the kingdom of man…" Prophets and Kings, page 495.

6.
WHY WAS THE SECRET REVEALED TO DANIEL? Dan. 2:30.

NOTE --- "When called to stand before King Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel did not hesitate to acknowledge the source of his wisdom. Did that faithful recognition of God detract from Daniel's influence in the king's court? By no means; it was the secret of his power; it secured for him favor in the eyes of the ruler of Babylon. In God's name Daniel made known to the king the heaven-sent messages of instruction, warning, and rebuke, and he was not repulsed. Let God's workers of today read the firm, bold testimony of Daniel and follow his example." – Testimonies, Vol. 7, page 151.

"God gave to Nebuchadnezzar... the dream. By His prophet, He gave the interpretation. . . that the king might learn that truth was more than the ambitions of patriotism." – Prophets and Kings, page 495.

Lesson 4

THE KING'S DREAM
Part II

7/25/70

MEMORY GEM:"Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces." – Daniel 2:34.

STUDY HELP:Daniel 2:31-35.

INTRODUCTION:"Behold the Jewish captive, calm and self-possessed, in the presence of the monarch of the world's most powerful empire. In his first words he disclaimed honor for himself, and exalted God as the source of all wisdom. To the anxious inquiry of the king, 'Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?' he replied '...there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days.' " – Prophets and Kings, pages 494, 497.

*  *  *

1.
WHAT SORT OF IMAGE HAD THE KING SEEN IN HIS DREAM? Dan. 2:31.

2.
OF WHAT WAS THE HEAD OF THE IMAGE COMPOSED? Dan. 2:32.

3.
DESCRIBE THE OTHER PARTS OF THE IMAGE? Vs. 32,33.

NOTE -----"Gold is the chief of metals which would stand as number one; silver is second to gold, therefore number two; brass is third to gold, meaning number three. The lion, the bear, and the leopard are numbered in like manner. The lion is king or chief of beasts, therefore number one, corresponding with the gold. The bear is second to a lion, therefore number two, corresponding with silver. The leopard is third to a lion, hence number three, corresponding with the brass." – The Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 2, page 41.

4.
WHAT BROKE THE IMAGE TO PIECES? Dan. 2:34.

NOTE -- "We hold it to be a simple, self-evident truth that as the stone (Dan. 2:34) is symbolical of the Kingdom, and that as it smites the toes of the image, It necessarily must be set up before It smites them, just as Daniel said: 'In the days of these kings [toe-kings: the kings of today] shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom.' 'In the days of these kings,' cannot mean after their days. And unless the Kingdom is set up (brought into being), It cannot smite the nations." – Answerer Book 1, p. 24. (Brackets & Parenthesis belong)

10

Lesson 4, page 2

5.
HOW WAS THE STONE CUT OUT? Dan. 2:34.

NOTE --- "The stone' (Dan. 2:45; Zech. 3:9), the 144, 000 (Rev. 14:1), 'cut out of the mountain [the Laodicean church] without hands' (without human help), is to break the nations. . . " – Tract No. 8, page 63. (Brackets & Parenthesis belong to quotation)

"…..the 'stone' being 'cut out' of the mountain (verse 45), and being symbolical of the kingdom of Christ in its beginning (verse 44), then the mountain from which it is cut out, must necessarily represent the church from which the first fruits of the kingdom, the 144,000, are gathered." – Tract No. 9, page 41. (Parentheses belong to quotation)

"…..the stone which smote the great image was cut out without hands (without man's aid, and by the Lord Himself). . ." – Tract No. 3, page 49. (Parenthesis belongs to quotation)

6.
TO WHAT ARE THE PIECES OF THE IMAGE COMPARED? Dan. 2:35.

NOTE --- "The Spirit of God must do its work upon the heart. All who have not experienced its regenerating power are chaff among the wheat." – Testimonies, Vol. 5, page 227.

7.
WHAT CARRIED THE PIECES OF THE IMAGE AWAY AS CHAFF? Dan. 2:35.

NOTE --- "Every wind of doctrine will be blowing, false revivals and reformations will be at their peak. Everything that can be done will be done to distort the Truth and thus distract and dishearten believers and draw their attention to something other than the message of Elijah." – G.C.S., p. 8. (1950 Edition)

"Chaff like a cloud will be borne away on the wind, even from places where we see only floors of rich wheat." – Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 81.

8.
HOW GREAT DID THE STONE THAT SMOTE THE IMAGE BECOME? Dan. 2:35.

NOTE --- "The seeds of truth that are being sown by missionary efforts will then spring up and blossom and bear fruit." – Ibid., page 82.

"The fact... that the stone grows and fills 'the whole earth,' is another evidence in the proof that after this long-looked-for kingdom is 'set up,' a great multitude is to join it. Were this not so, then the stone could not become 'a great mountain.' " – Tract No. 9, page 41. (Read Zech. 2:11.)

Lesson 5

THE INTERPRETATION OF THE DREAM

8/1/70

MEMORY GEM:"Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure." – Isa. 46:9, 10.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 2:36-44; Prophets and Kings, pages 496-502.

INTRODUCTION:"God gave the dream and its interpretation to Nebuchadnezzar, not alone that the Babylonian king might know, but that every king who followed him might know, that earthly kingdoms are all temporal at best, and must pass away, and that the only eternal kingdom, which shall never pass away, is the kingdom of the Living Stone, Christ Jesus... In the days of the last divisions of Rome, the God of heaven shall set up His kingdom, never to be destroyed, never to be given to another people than His own, who shall inhabit it forever." – Prophets and Kings, pages 495, 496.

1.
HOW GREAT WAS NEBUCHADNEZZAR'S KINGDOM? Dan. 2:38.

NOTE --- "To Nebuchadnezzar the king the true object of national government was represented under the figure of a great tree, whose height 'reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth. . .' This representation shows the character of a government that fulfills God's purpose – a government that protects and upbuilds the nation. God exalted Babylon that it might fulfill this purpose. Prosperity attended the nation until it reached a height of wealth and power that has never since been equaled – fitly represented in the Scriptures by the inspired symbol, a 'head of gold.' " – Ed., 175.

2.
WHAT WAS TO FOLLOW THE BABYLONIAN KINGDOM? Dan. 2:39.

NOTE --- "In the history of nations the student of God's word may behold the literal fulfillment of divine prophecy. Babylon, shattered and broken at last, passed away because in prosperity its rulers had regarded themselves as independent of God, and had ascribed the glory of their kingdom to human achievement. The Medo-Persian realm was visited by the wrath of Heaven because in it God's law had been trampled underfoot. The fear of the Lord had found no place in the hearts of the vast majority of the people... Wickedness,

12

Lesson 5, page 2

blasphemy, and corruption prevailed. The kingdoms that followed were even more base and corrupt; and these sank lower and still lower in the scale of moral worth." – Prophets and Kings, pages 501, 502.

3.
HOW STRONG WAS THE FOURTH KINGDOM TO BE? Dan. 2:40.

4.

DESCRIBE THE KINGDOMS REPRESENTED BY THE FEET AND TOES OF THE IMAGE? Dan. 2:41-43.

NOTE --- "Our kingdom is not of this world. We are waiting for our Lord from heaven to come to earth to put down all authority and power, and set up His everlasting kingdom. Earthly powers are shaken. We need not, and cannot, expect union among the nations of the earth. Our position in the image of Nebuchadnezzar is represented by the toes, in a divided state, and of a crumbling material, that will not hold together. Prophecy shows us that the great day of God is right upon us. It hasteth greatly." – Testimonies, Vol. 1, pages 360, 361.

5.

IN THE DAYS OF THESE KINGS WHO IS TO SET UP HIS KINGDOM? Dan. 2:44.

NOTE --- "Daniel here describes how the earth's governments come to their end. . . He interpreted the stone to be the Kingdom, and it is God's Kingdom that will smite the nations. . . What plainer language could be used to say that the Kingdom is going to be set up before the nations come to their end? The trouble some have believing this is not because of the language the Bible used, but the trouble is with our preconceived ideas that were built up throughout the years, and the only way we can drive out our former erroneous ideas is to believe just what the Bible says." – Symbolic Code Vol. 11, No. 12, p. 19.

"Christ is coming to establish His kingdom on the earth." – Testimonies, Vol. 9 page 63.

"He made us clearly understand that the gospel of the kingdom is the message for which the world is perishing. . ." – Ibid., page 67.

"Many are on the verge of the kingdom, waiting only to be gathered in." – Acts of the Apostles, page 109.

"Let it not be said of this highly favored people, as of the Jews when the good news of the kingdom was preached to them: 'Ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.' " – Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 728.

Lesson 6

THE FULFILLMENT OF THE DREAM

8/8/70

MEMORY GEM:"While they (the disciples) were not to behold the coming of the kingdom in their day, the fact that Jesus bade them pray for it, is evidence that in God's own time it will surely come." – The Mount of Blessing, page 159.

INTRODUCTION:". . . in this last generation the parable of the mustard seed is to reach a signal and triumphant fulfillment. The little seed will become a tree. The last message of warning and mercy is to go to 'every nation, and kindred, and tongue,' 'to take out of them a people for His name.' And the earth shall be 'lightened with His glory.' " – C.O.L., p. 79.

1.

WHEN DOES INSPIRATION SAY THE KINGDOM IS TO BE? Isa. 2:2,3; Micah 4:1,2.

NOTE --- "The final overthrow of all earthly dominions is plainly foretold in the word of truth. In the prophecy uttered when sentence from God was pronounced upon the last king of Israel is given the message: 'Thus saith the Lord God; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown:. . . exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until He come whose right it is; and I will give it Him.' ...The crown removed from Israel passed successively to the kingdoms of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. God says, 'It shall be no more, until He come whose right it is; and I will give it Him.' That time is at hand. Today the signs of the times declare that we are standing on the threshold of great and solemn events." – Education, page 179.

When the crown passes to the king of Israel, the crown is taken off of the nations. The Kingdom begins when He comes whose right it is; then the crown passes back to Israel's king. "And so all Israel shall be saved:" Rom. 11:26. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul. . . " 1 Sam. 16:13,14. "And it shall come to pass in that day (in our day). . . the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing." Isa. 10:27. "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt. 4:17.

COMMENT --- The Davidic kingdom began when David was anointed, although he did not ascend the throne until after the death of Saul. "Why David a Type?" (Tr. 8:47) After Jesus' anointing, His kingdom began, but He did not take His Kingly honors until the day of Pentecost when He was officially

inaugurated in His mediatorial kingdom in the courts above. (See C.O.L. 120) "Since. . . Christ ('Immanuel') did not live in the time of such a confederacy (as is being formed among the nations of today, See Isa. chapters 7, 8, 12-14), it must be that not only Israel, Syria, and Assyria are types, but Christ Himself is also a type." – Symbolic Code Vol. 12, No. 1, pages 5, 6. "Wherefore, the virgin-birth prophecy does not refer alone to the birth of Christ, but even more significantly to His followers – the birth and development of Christendom." – Tract No 14, page 34. "Since therefore from the 'stem' of Jesse came the 'rod' (David), and from the rod sprang the Branch (Christ), David the visible king and Christ the invisible King of kings shall 'in that day' – in our time – constitute the 'ensign,'..." – Tract No 8, page 47.

2.
HOW DOES INSPIRATION SAY THE KINGDOM BEGINS? Eze. 17:22-24.

NOTE --- "The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed..." Matt. 13:31. The Kingdom sprouts from the ground up – invisible at first, underground. It "cometh not with observation:" – Luke 17:20.

"Remove the diadem, and take off the crown:. . . exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high." – Education, p. 179. (Read C.O.L. 79) The Lord cuts a tender Branch out of the high tree (Eze. 17:23). Likewise the stone is cut out of the mountain (church) without hands, by the Lord Himself (Dan. 2:34).

" 'In that day,' in the day this purification takes place, the gospel work is to be quickly finished by having every member of the Lord's house call his neighbor to his own patch of land, to that which God has pre-ordained that everyone should have." – Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 8, page 25.

3.
HOW CAN WE KNOW WHEN THIS KINGDOM SPROUTS? Isa. 10:26,27.

NOTE --- As we review the events of the day it is not difficult to see where we are in the stream of prophetic time, for example: (1) the nations are crumbling; (read Dan. 2:34); (2) the burdensome yoke of the uninspired Davidian Council has been removed (Amos 4:7; 1:2) "because of the anointing" (Isa. 10:27) which occured prior to 1959; (3) the "image" to the first beast, (Rev. 13:11-14), has been set up since 1960 in the U.S.A. (the land of the two-horned beast) which resulted in the loss of her civil crown, when the Protestants ceased protesting and consented to the election of a son of the Papacy to the presidency in America; then, in less than five months after the President took office the Sunday Blue Laws were declared Constitutional by the Supreme Court. Thus, the principles of the Constitution guaranteeing freedom of religion to all were repudiated by a representative of the power of Dan. 7:25 that thought to change times and laws.

Lesson 7

THE RULER OF THE KINGDOM

8/15/70

MEMORY GEM:"Who is to bring this revival and reformation, this great change? – The BRANCH." – 1 T.G.r., 8:24.

INTRODUCTION:"Zechariah's vision of Joshua and the Angel applies with peculiar force to the experience of God's people in the closing up of the great day of atonement." – Test. Vol. 5:472

1.

WHO IS ANOINTED AND CROWNED AS RULER IN THE HOUSE OF GOD? Zech. 3:1-5.

NOTE --- " 'Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest.' The angel is commanded to take silver and gold, and to make crowns – not one, but more than one. These are set upon Joshua's head. 'And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the Lord.' Verse 14 reveals that Joshua is to pass the crowns on to his helpers whom the Lord Himself names. This is to be a memorial, an everlasting reminder in the temple of the Lord." – Timely Greetings Vol. 1, No. 8 revised, page 26.

"Verse 12 -- 'And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and He shall grow up out of His place, and He shall build the temple of the Lord.' Joshua is well instructed that the burden and the ingenuity for building this spiritual temple, belongs to Him Whose name is 'the BRANCH.' He is to grow out of His place. To Him be the glory. He alone is to be exalted. He is to build the temple of the Lord." – Ibid., page 27.

"...and the counsel of peace shall be between them both." Zech. 6:13.

"What can all this mean? – Just this: Joshua is Heaven's appointed judge, ruler. He himself is crowned as such. And in response to the Lord's Own command, Joshua crowns (authorizes) his helpers whom the Lord Himself names. In other words, as members of 'the house of David,' Joshua authorizes them to engage in the work. So, Joshua is responsible to the Lord, but his helpers are responsible to Joshua. Here is seen an organization having a Leader and an under leader – the Lord (BRANCH) and Joshua." – Timely Greetings Vol. 1, No. 8 revised, page 26. (First parenthesis belongs to quotation)

2.

BEFORE WHOM IS LAID THE STONE THAT SMITES THE IMAGE OF DANIEL 2:34? Zech. 3:9.

16

Lesson 7, page 2

NOTE --- "Those who sit before Joshua are 'men wondered at.' As such they are depicted by the 'stone' (church, or Kingdom) that is in Joshua's sight. It has seven eye–perfect vision. When this purification of the church takes place then the sin in the land is quickly removed – 'in one day.' Here is seen genuine revival and reformation accompanied by the purification of the church. The Lord is to have a pure church and a clean people." – Ibid., p. 25. (Parenthesis belongs to quote)

". . . as a result of this revival and reformation within the Laodicean church, another church emerges of which Joshua is in charge, not the angel of Laodicea." – Ibid., page 24.

3.

WHAT IS TO TAKE PLACE IN THE DAYS OF ANTI-TYPICAL JOSHUA AND THE BRANCH? Zech. 3:10.

NOTE --- " 'In that day,' in the day this purification takes place, the gospel work is to be quickly finished by having every member of the Lord's house call his neighbor to his own patch of land, to that which God had preordained that everyone should have. Every member, therefore, is to be a missionary in one capacity or in another. This indeed is the layman's movement that shall finish the gospel work." – Ibid., page 25.

4.

IN THE DAYS THIS PURIFICATION TAKES PLACE WHAT IS OPENED TO THE HOUSE OF DAVID? Zech. 13:1,2.

NOTE --- " 'In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.' (Zech. 13:1.) Note that this fountain is able to wash away two things; first sin, and second uncleanness. What is the difference between the one and the other? 'Sin is the transgression of the law.' (1 John 3:4.) And the result of sin is the decay of the body. . . The Biblical term for sickness is, 'Uncleanness.' " – Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 2, page 290.

"Two things now stand out clearly in these verses: (1) that the house of David must come into existence before the cleansing fountain is opened; (2) that the cleansing begins with cutting off the names of the idols, and throwing out of the land the false prophets and the unclean spirits." – 1 T.G. 18:14, 15.

5.

OF WHAT WILL THE PEOPLE TAKE HOLD IN THE TIME OF THIS PURIFICATION AND CLEANSING? Zech. 8:23.

NOTE --- "Obviously, the 'Jew' whose skirt the people will take hold of must be the one through whom the Lord is working to reveal Himself and His Truth to the people. Having discovered this fact, naturally they will say, 'We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you." – 1 T.G. 16:29.

Lesson 8

NEBUCHADNEZZAR DREAMS OF A GREAT TREE
Part I

8/22/70

MEMORY GEM:"The blacksmith puts the iron and steel into the fire that he may know what manner of metal they are. The Lord allows His chosen ones to be placed in the furnace of affliction in order that He may see what temper they are of and whether He can mold and fashion them for His work." – 7 Test., p. 214.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 4:1-7; Prophets and Kings, pages 514-517.

INTRODUCTION:"The refusal of the three Hebrews to bow down to the idol, and the miracle by which they were saved from the fiery furnace, had deeply affected the minds of the rulers, but it too, failed to change the king's heart. Again he honored the God of gods with his lips but not by his deeds. The king's ungodly deeds made it necessary for a supernatural penalty. Hence a tremendous effort to bring him to a realization of his dependence upon the Creator was necessary. The dream given him (in chapter four), of the great tree – a symbol of himself and its interpretation by Daniel, had convinced the hardhearted monarch of its truth, and the judgment that was to fall upon him, except he repent." – Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 2:46.

*  *  *

1.

WHAT DESIRE DID NEBUCHADNEZZAR EXPRESS FOR ALL PEOPLE? Dan. 4:1.

NOTE --- "Exalted to the pinnacle of worldly honor, and acknowledged even by Inspiration as 'a king of kings,' Nebuchadnezzar nevertheless at times had ascribed to the favor of Jehovah the glory of his kingdom and the splendor of his reign." – Prophets and Kings, page 514.

"There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked." – Isa. 57:21. But Jesus promised peace, 'Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." – John 14:27.

2.
WHAT SIGNS AND WONDERS DID THE KING WISH TO KNOW? Dan. 4:2,3.

NOTE --- ". . . the Babylonian empire, universal though it was, was finally to fall, and other kingdoms were to bear sway, until at last all earthly powers were to be superceded by a kingdom set up by the God of heaven, which kingdom was never to be destroyed." – Prophets and Kings, page 514.

18

Lesson 8, page 2

3.
WHOSE KINGDOM IS AN EVERLASTING KINGDOM? Dan. 4:3 last part.

NOTE --- "Nebuchadnezzar's noble conception of God's purpose concerning the nations was lost sight of later in his experience; yet when his proud spirit was humbled before the multitude on the plains of Dura, he once more had acknowledged that God's kingdom is 'an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation.' An idolator by birth and training, and at the head of an idolatrous people, he had nevertheless an innate sense of justice and right, and God was able to use him as an instrument for the punishment of the rebellious and for the fulfillment of the divine purpose." – Ibid., pp. 514, 515.

4.

WHERE WAS NEBUCHADNEZZAR WHEN THE DREAM CAME TO HIM? Dan.4:4

NOTE --- "In mercy God gave the king another dream, to warn him of his peril, and of the snare that had been laid for his ruin. In a vision of the night, Nebuchadnezzar saw a great tree growing in the midst of the earth, its top towering to the heavens, and its branches stretching to the ends of the earth." – Ibid., page 515.

"Those upon whose actions hang the destinies of nations, are watched over with a vigilance that knows no relaxation by Him who 'giveth salvation unto kings,' to whom belong 'the shields of the earth' (R&H March 28, 1907)." – S.D.A. Bible Commentary, Vol. 4, page 1170.

5.
WHAT EFFECT DID THE DREAM HAVE ON HIM? Dan. 4:5.

6.
UPON WHOM DID THE KING CALL IN HIS TROUBLE? Dan. 4:6.

NOTE --- "The king in his perplexity sent for his servant Daniel, a man esteemed for his integrity and constancy and for his unrivaled wisdom." – P.K. 516.

"We may keep so near to God that in every unexpected trial our thoughts will turn to Him as naturally as the flower turns to the sun." – S.C., p. 104.

7.
WHO WERE UNABLE TO REVEAL THE MEANING OF THE DREAM? Dan. 4:7.

NOTE --- "Greatly troubled by the dream, which was evidently a prediction of adversity, the king repeated it to 'the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers;' but although the dream was very explicit, none of the wise men could interpret it. Once more in this idolatrous nation, testimony was to be borne to the fact that only those who love and fear God can understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven." – Prophets and Kings, p. 516.

Lesson 9

NEBUCHADNEZZAR DREAMS OF A GREAT TREE
Part II

8/29/70

MEMORY GEM: ". . . that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will…." – Dan. 4:17.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 4:8-17; Prophets and Kings, pages 514-517.

INTRODUCTION:"The king (Nebuchadnezzar) saw his prosperity, and because of it he was lifted up. Notwithstanding the warnings that God had given him, he did the very things which the Lord had told him not to do. He looked upon his kingdom with pride and exclaimed: 'Is not this great Babylon, that I have built...' " – Testimonies Vol. 8, pages 126, 127.

*  *  *

1.
WHAT SPIRIT DWELT IN DANIEL? Dan. 4:8.

NOTE --- "However contracted may be our sphere, we still exert an influence for weal or woe. Beyond our knowledge or control, it tells upon others in blessing or cursing. It may be heavy with the gloom of discontent and selfishness, or poisonous with the deadly taint of some cherished sin; or it may be charged with the life-giving power of faith, courage, and hope, and sweet with the fragrance of love. But potent for good or for ill it will surely be." – Prophets and Kings, page 85.

2.
WHAT DID THE KING RECOGNIZE IN DANIEL? Dan. 4:9.

3.

HOW GREAT WAS THE TREE THAT THE KING SAW IN HIS DREAM? Dan. 4:10-12.

NOTE --- "Study Nebuchadnezzar's dream as recorded in the fourth chapter of Daniel. The king saw a lofty tree planted in the earth. Flocks and herds from the mountains and hills enjoyed its shelter, and the birds of the air built their nests in its branches. Thus were represented Nebuchadnezzar's greatness and prosperity. Nations were gathered under his sovereignty. His kingdom was firmly established in the hearts of his loyal subjects." – Test. Vol. 8, p. 126.

6.
IN THE DREAM, WHO CAME FROM HEAVEN? Dan. 4:13.

NOTE --- "To His angels He gives the commission to execute His judgments." – Testimonies to Ministers, page 431.

"God is now testing and proving His people. Character is being developed.

20

Lesson 9, page 2

Angels are weighing moral worth, and keeping a faithful record of all the acts of the children of men." – Testimonies Vol. 1, pages 332, 333.

7.
WHAT WAS TO BE DONE TO THE TREE? Dan. 4:14.

NOTE --- "No soul is ever finally deserted of God, given up to his own ways, so long as there is any hope of his salvation. 'Man turns from God, not God from him.' Our heavenly Father follows us with appeals and warnings and assurances of compassion, until further opportunities and privileges would be wholly in vain." – The Mount of Blessing, pages 137, 138.

6.
HOW WAS THE STUMP TO BE TREATED? Dan. 4:15.

NOTE --- Although the tree was to be cut down, the stump was to be preserved. Thus it is with the tree of Isa. 11:1. Notwithstanding, the tree of Jesse was cut back, a rod grew out of its stump, and granting the rod withered, yet out of the stump (A.R.V.) or roots, a Branch is growing. "However, unlike the tree of Isa. 11:1, an iron band was placed around the stump of the tree in Daniel's prophecy, signifying that king Nebuchadnezzar was to be restored as ruler of Babylon – the iron band prevented a shoot from springing up." – B. L. R.

7.
HOW WAS THIS DECREE TO AFFECT THE KING? Dan. 4:16.

NOTE --- ". . . as soon as his human heart was taken away from him and the heart of a beast put in him, just that soon his own desires and ways left him and the desires and ways of a beast entered him." – Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 48, page 30.

8.
FOR WHAT PURPOSE WAS THE DECREE GIVEN? Dan. 4:17.

NOTE --- " '. . . till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will. And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the Heavens do rule.' Having faithfully interpreted the dream, Daniel urged the proud monarch to repent and turn to God, that by right-doing he might avert the threatened calamity. 'O king,' the prophet pleaded, 'let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquility.' " – Prophets and Kings, pp. 518, 519.

Lesson 10

THE KING'S DREAM FULFILLED
Part I

9/5/70

MEMORY GEM:"My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth." – Proverbs 3:11, 12.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 4:18-27; Prophets and Kings, pages 417-421.

INTRODUCTION:"Let men become lifted up in pride, and the Lord will not sustain them and keep them from falling. Let a church become proud and boastful, not depending on God, not exalting His power, and that church will surely be left by the Lord, to be brought down to the ground. Let a people glory in wealth, intellect, knowledge, or in anything but Christ, and they will soon be brought to confusion." – 8 T. 127.

*  *  *

1.
OF WHAT DID THE KING ASSURE DANIEL? Dan. 4:18.

2.
HOW WAS DANIEL AFFECTED BY THE DREAM? Dan. 4:19 first part.

NOTE --- "To Daniel the meaning of the dream was plain, and its significance startled him. He 'was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him.' " – Prophets and Kings, page 517.

3.

HOW DID THE KING SEEK TO ENCOURAGE DANIEL TO INTERPRET THE DREAM? Dan. 4:19.

NOTE --- "Seeing Daniel's hesitation and distress, the king expressed sympathy for his servant. 'Belteshazzar,' he said, 'let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee.' " – Ibid., page 517.

4.

TO WHOM DID DANIEL WISH THE DREAM WOULD APPLY? Dan. 4:19 last part.

NOTE --- "The prophet realized that upon him God had laid the solemn duty of revealing to Nebuchadnezzar the judgment that was about to fall upon him because of his pride and arrogance. Daniel must interpret the dream in language the king could understand; and although its dreadful import had made him hesitate in dumb amazement, yet he must state the truth, whatever the consequences to himself." – Ibid., page 517.

22

Lesson 10, page 2

5.
WHO WAS REPRESENTED BY THE GREAT TREE? Dan.4:20-22.

NOTE --- "To Nebuchadnezzar the king the true object of national government was represented under the figure of a great tree, whose height 'reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth; the leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all;' under its shadow the beasts of the field dwelt, and among its branches the birds of the air had their habitation... This representation shows the character of a government that fulfills God's purpose – a government that protects and upbuilds the nation." – Education, page 175.

6.

FOR HOW LONG WAS THE KING'S PORTION TO BE WITH THE BEASTS? Dan. 4:23.

7.
BY WHOM HAD THE DECREE COME UPON THE KING? Dan. 4:24.

8.
AT THE END OF THE TIME, WHAT WOULD THE KING KNOW? Dan. 4:25.

NOTE --- "The Lord desires all to understand that their prosperity is hid with Him in Christ; that it is dependent on their humility and meekness, their wholehearted obedience and devotion." – Testimonies, Vol. 7, page 212.

9.
WHAT WAS TO BE SURE TO THE KING? Dan. 4:26.

NOTE --- Wonderful is the mercy and love of God! He could have taken away the dominion and honor from the king, and never returned it to him. He could have placed another upon the throne of Babylon and made the king a servant of servants. But God in His love and kindness preserved the kingdom for the king, and his power and honor were returned to him as soon as he had learned that "the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will."

10.
WHAT COUNSEL DID DANIEL GIVE THE KING? Dan. 4:27.

NOTE --- "It is just as essential that the people of God in this day should bear in mind how and when they have been tested, and where their faith has failed; where they have imperiled His cause by their unbelief and also by their self-confidence. God's mercy, His sustaining providence, His never-to-be-forgotten deliverances, are to be recounted, step by step. As God's people thus review the past, they should see that the Lord is ever repeating His dealings." – Testimonies, Vol. 7, page 210.

23

Lesson 11

THE KING'S DREAM FULFILLED
Part II

9/12/70

MEMORY GEM:"I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found." – Ps. 37:35, 36.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 4:29-37; Prophets and Kings, pages 417-421.

INTRODUCTION:

"The instant that the words were uttered, the sentence of judgment was pronounced. The king's reason was taken away. The judgment that he had thought so perfect, the wisdom that he had prided himself on possessing, were removed." – Testimonies Vol. 8, page 127.

"Daniel... speaking of the penalty that was to fall upon the king before he was driven from his throne to the field with the beasts, says: 'Let his heart be changed from a man's and let a beast's heart be given unto him. . .' After the king's heart was changed, he lost his reason, and by nature became equal to an ox." – Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 2, p. 45.

*  *  *

1.
WHEN DID THE DREAM BEGIN TO BE FULFILLED? Dan. 4:29.

NOTE --- "For months the judgment of God lingered. But instead of being led to repentance by this forbearance, the king indulged his pride until he lost confidence in the interpretation of the dream, and jested at his former fears." – Prophets and Kings page 519.

2.
OF WHAT WAS THE KING BOASTING? Dan. 4:30.

NOTE --- "A year from the time he had received the warning, Nebuchadnezzar, walking in his palace, and thinking with pride of his power as a ruler and of his success as a builder, exclaimed, 'Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?' While the proud boast was yet on the king's lips a voice from heaven announced that God's appointed time of judgment had come. Upon his ears fell the mandate of Jehovah: 'O King Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.' " – Ibid., pp. 519, 520.

3.
HOW QUICKLY WAS HE DRIVEN FROM MEN? Dan. 4:31-33.

24

Lesson 11, page 2

NOTE --- "In a moment the reason that God had given him was taken away; the judgment that the king thought perfect, the wisdom on which he prided himself, was removed, and the once mighty ruler was a maniac. His hand could no longer sway the scepter." – Ibid., page 520.

"The jewel of the mind, that which elevates man above the beasts, he no longer retained... He now herds with the cattle to eat as they eat. He is a companion of the beasts of the field. The brow that once wore a coronet is disfigured by the absence of reason and intellect." – Testimonies, Vol. 8, p. 127,

4.

WHEN THE KING'S UNDERSTANDING RETURNED, WHAT DID HE DO? Dan. 4:34,35.

NOTE --- "For seven years Nebuchadnezzar was an astonishment to all his subjects; for seven years he was humbled before all the world. Then his reason was restored, and looking up in humility to the God of heaven, he recognized the divine hand in his chastisement. In a public proclamation he acknowledged his guilt, and the great mercy of God in his restoration." – P.K., p. 520.

5.
WHO AGAIN SOUGHT AFTER NEBUCHADNEZZAR? Dan. 4:36.

NOTE --- It was essential that Nebuchadnezzar be humbled. In no other way could God save him. But now that the king had learned the lesson and was a humble child of God he could be safely blessed. God not only gave him back the kingdom and glory that he had before his humiliation but also, 'excellent majesty was added' to him.

"How often we misinterpret God's blessings, and flatter ourselves that we are favored on account of some goodness in us. God cannot do for us that which He longs to do. His gifts are used to increase our self-satisfaction, and to harden our hearts in unbelief and sin." – Desire of Ages, page 106.

6.
WHAT IS GOD ABLE TO DO? Dan. 4:37.

NOTE --- "The once proud monarch had become a humble child of God. He who had defied and blasphemed the God of heaven, now acknowledged the power of the Most High, and earnestly sought to promote the fear of Jehovah and the happiness of his subjects. Under the rebuke of Him who is King of kings, and Lord of lords, Nebuchadnezzar had learned at last the lesson which all rulers need to learn, – that true greatness consists in true goodness." – Prophets and Kings, page 521.

25

Lesson 12

DANIEL'S GREAT TEST
Part I

9/19/70

MEMORY GEM:"A man whose heart is stayed upon God will be the same in the hour of his greatest trial as he is in prosperity, when the light and favor of God and of man beam upon him." P.K. 545.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 6:1-10; Prophets and Kings, pages 539-543.

INTRODUCTION:"With full knowledge of the king's decree, Daniel still bows before His God, 'his windows being open.' He considers supplication to God of so great importance that he would rather sacrifice his life than relinquish it." – 1 T., p. 296.

*  *  *

1.
HOW MANY PRINCES DID DARIUS SET OVER HIS KINGDOM? Dan. 6:1.

2.
WHO WAS MADE FIRST OF THE 3 PRESIDENTS? Dan. 6:2.

NOTE --- "When Darius the Median took the throne formerly occupied by the Babylonian rulers, he at once proceeded to reorganize the government. He 'set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes …..and over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first:...' " – Prophets and Kings, page 539.

3.
WHAT PREFERENCE WAS SHOWN TO DANIEL? Dan. 6:3.

NOTE --- " 'Ye are the light of the world.' What an impression was produced upon Darius by the conduct of Daniel! Daniel lived a pure and holy life. God was first with him. Whenever real Christianity reigns in the heart, it will be revealed in the character. All will take knowledge of such, that they have been with Jesus. The undivided affections must be given to God." – T.M., p. 443.

4.

WHAT DID THE PRESIDENTS AND PRINCES SEEK AGAINST DANIEL? Dan. 6:4 first part.

NOTE --- "The honors bestowed upon Daniel excited the jealousy of the leading men of the kingdom, and they sought for occasion of complaint against him. But they could find none, 'foreasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.' " – Prophets and Kings, page 539.

"Envy is one of the most satanic traits that can exist in the human heart, and it is one of the most baleful in its effects... It was envy that first caused discord in heaven, and its indulgence has wrought untold evil among men." – P.P. 385.

5.

HOW MUCH ERROR OR FAULT COULD THEY FIND IN DANIEL AND HIS WORK? Dan. 6:4.

26

Lesson 12, page 2

NOTE --- "A man of like passions as ourselves, the pen of inspiration describes him as without fault. His business transactions, when subjected to the closest scrutiny of his enemies, were found to be without one flaw. He was an example of what every business man may become when his heart is converted and consecrated, and when his motives are right in the sight of God." – P.K. 546.

6.
WHERE DID THEY DECIDE TO CAUSE TROUBLE? Dan. 6:5.

NOTE --- "Thereupon the presidents and princes, counseling together, devised a scheme whereby they hoped to accomplish the prophet's destruction. They determined to ask the king to sign a decree which they should prepare, forbidding any person in the realm to ask anything of God or man, except of Darius the king, for the space of thirty days. A violation of this decree should be punished by casting the offender into a den of lions." – Ibid., p. 540.

7.
HOW DID THEY APPROACH THE KING IN THIS MATTER? Dan. 6:6,7.

NOTE --- "Accordingly, the princes prepared such a decree, and presented it to Darius for his signature. Appealing to his vanity, they persuaded him that the carrying out of this edict would add greatly to his honor and authority. Ignorant of the subtle purpose of the princes, the king did not discern their animosity as revealed in the decree, and, yielding to their flattery, he signed it. The enemies of Daniel left the presence of Darius, rejoicing over the snare now securely laid for the servant of Jehovah. In the conspiracy thus formed, Satan had played an important part. The prophet was high in command in the kingdom, and evil angels feared that his influence would weaken their control over its rulers. It was these satanic agencies who had stirred the princes to envy and jealousy; it was they who had inspired the plan for Daniel's destruction; and the princes, yielding themselves as instruments of evil, carried it into effect." – Ibid., 540.

8.

WHAT LAWS COULD NOT BE ALTERED EVEN BY THE KING? Dan. 6:8; Esther 8:8.

9.

WHAT DID DANIEL DO WHEN HE KNEW THE DECREE HAD BEEN SIGNED? Dan. 6:10.

NOTE --- "The prophet's enemies counted on Daniel's firm adherence to principle for the success of their plan. And they were not mistaken in their estimate of his character. He quickly read their malignant purpose in framing the decree, but he did not change his course in a single particular. Why should he cease to pray now, when he most needed to pray?. . . in accordance with his usual custom, he offered his petition to the God of heaven. He did not try to conceal his act.. . he would not allow it even to appear that his connection with Heaven was severed." – Ibid., pp. 540-542.

27

Lesson 13

DANIEL'S GREAT TEST
Part II

9/26/70

MEMORY GEM:"Daniel stands before the world-today a worthy example of Christian fearlessness and fidelity." – P.K. 542.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 6:11-22; Prophets and Kings, pages 539-543.

INTRODUCTION:"Daniel prayed unto his God three times a day. Satan is enraged at the sound of fervent prayer... The accusing host of evil angels stirred up the presidents and princes to envy and jealousy, and they watched Daniel closely to find some occasion against him that they might report him to the king; but they failed. Then these agents of Satan sought to make his faithfulness to God the cause of his destruction. Evil angels laid out the plan for them, and these agents readily carried it into effect." – Test. Vol. 1, p. 295.

*  *  *

1.

WHO FOUND DANIEL PRAYING AND MAKING SUPPLICATION TO GOD? Dan. 6:11.

NOTE --- "Although Daniel was one of the world's great men, he was not proud nor self-sufficient. He felt the need of refreshing his soul with prayer, and each day found him in earnest supplication before God. He would not be deprived of this privilege even when a den of lions was opened to receive him if he continued to pray." – Testimonies Vol. 4, page 569.

"For an entire day the princes watched Daniel. Three times they saw him go to his chamber, and three times they heard his voice lifted in earnest intercession to God." – Prophets and Kings, page 542.

2.

WHAT DID THESE MEN ASK THE KING ABOUT THE DECREE, AND WHOM DID THEY ACCUSE OF DISREGARDING THE KING AND HIS DECREE? Dan. 6:12,13.

NOTE --- "The next morning they laid their complaint before the king. Daniel, his most honored and faithful statesman, had set the royal decree at defiance. . . Exultantly they now informed Darius of the conduct of his most trusted advisor. 'That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah,' they exclaimed, 'regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.' " – Ibid., pages 542. 543.

3.

HOW DID THE KING FEEL ABOUT THEIR REPORT AND HOW LONG DID HE SEEK FOR A WAY TO DELIVER DANIEL? Dan. 6:14.

NOTE --- "When the monarch heard these words, he saw at once the snare that

28

Lesson 13, page 2

had been set for his faithful servant. He saw that it was not zeal for kingly glory and honor, but jealousy against Daniel, that had led to the proposal for a royal decree." – Ibid., page 543.

4.

WHAT WAS DONE WITH DANIEL FOR DISOBEYING THE KING'S DECREE? Dan. 6:15,16,

NOTE --- "God did not prevent Daniel's enemies from casting him into the lion's den; He permitted evil angels and wicked men thus far to accomplish their purpose; but it was that He might make the deliverance of His servant more marked, and the defeat of the enemies of truth and righteousness more complete. 'Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee,' the psalmist has testified. Through the courage of this one man who chose to follow right rather than policy, Satan was to be defeated, and the name of God was to be exalted and honored." – Ibid., pages 543, 544.

"We are not to give up in discouragement, but in every emergency we are to seek help from Him who has infinite resources at His command. Often we shall be surrounded with trying circumstances, and then, in the fullest confidence, we must depend upon God. He will keep every soul that is brought into perplexity through trying to keep the way of the Lord." – D.A., p. 369.

5.
WHAT DID THE KING TELL DANIEL THAT GOD WOULD DO FOR HIM? Dan. 6:16.

6.
HOW WAS THE MOUTH OF THE DEN SEALED? Dan. 6:17.

NOTE --- "So weak men counseled and planned. Little did these murderers realize the uselessness of their efforts. But by their action God was glorified." – Ibid., page 778.

6.
IN WHAT WAY DID THE KING PASS THE NIGHT? Dan. 6:18.

7.
WHAT DID THE KING DO EARLY IN THE MORNING? v. 19.

8.
HOW DID THE KING ADDRESS DANIEL? Dan. 6:20.

9.
WHAT REPLY CAME FROM THE LION'S DEN? Dan. 6:21,22.

NOTE --- "Christ identifies His interests with the interests of His faithful people; He suffers in the person of His saints; and whoever touches His chosen ones touches Him. The power that is near to deliver from physical harm or distress is also near to save from the greater evil, making it possible for the servant of God to maintain his integrity under all circumstances, and to triumph through divine grace." – Prophets and Kings, page 545.

"He who slumbers not... will thwart the purposes of wicked men. . ." – The Mount of Blessing, page 175.

Lesson 14

DANIEL'S GREAT TEST
Part III

10/3/70

MEMORY GEM:"Faith takes God at His word, not asking to understand the meaning of the trying experiences that come. . ." G.W. 261.

STUDY HELPS:Daniel 6:23-28; Prophets and Kings, pages 539-548.

INTRODUCTION:" 'Those who would rather die than perform a wrong act are the only ones who will be found faithful. '. . .They must look to God as their only deliverer, as did the three Hebrews in ancient Babylon, and as Daniel in the lion's den. Let the consequences be what it may. . . God's people, with Daniel, will be able to say at the time of their deliverance; 'My God hath sent His angel, and hath shut the lion's mouths, that they have not hurt me. . .' In such time of trial it shall be clearly seen who will serve God and who will not. That time of trouble shall divide the earth's inhabitants in two separate and distinct classes, as sheep and goats." – Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 2, page 109.

1.

WHY WAS NO MANNER OF HURT FOUND UPON DANIEL? Dan 6:23; Mat. 9:29.

NOTE --- "Those who surrender their lives to His guidance and to His service will never be placed in a position for which He has not made provision." – The Ministry of Healing, page 248.

2.

WHO WERE CAST INTO THE LIONS' DEN AFTER DANIEL WAS REMOVED? Dan. 6:24.

3.

WHAT REWARD IS GIVEN TO THE WICKED WHO LAY SNARES FOR THE RIGHTEOUS? Ps. 7:15; 9:15; Gal. 6:7.

NOTE --- "The seeds of envy, of evil thinking and evil speaking, germinate and produce a harvest of their kind, to be garnered by the one who planted the seed. 'Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap' (Letter 9, 1892)." – S.D.A. Bible Commentary, Vol. 1, page 1106.

"You are now sowing seed in the great field of life, and that which you now sow you will one day reap. Every thought of your mind, every emotion of your soul, every word of your tongue, every act you perform, is seed that will bear fruit for good or evil. The reaping time is not far distant. All our works are passing in review before God. All our actions and the motives which

30

Lesson 14, page 2

prompted them are to be open for the inspection of angels and of God." 4T. 63.

4.
TO WHOM DID DARIUS SEND PEACEFUL GREETINGS? Dan. 6:25.

NOTE --- " 'The wrath of man shall praise Thee,' says the psalmist; 'the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain.' God means that testing truth shall be brought to the front and become the subject of examination and discussion, even if it is through the contempt placed upon it. The minds of the people must be agitated. Every controversy, every reproach, every slander, will be God's means of provoking inquiry and awakening minds that otherwise would slumber .... So when the decree went forth forbidding prayer to any god save the king. As Daniel, according to his custom, made his supplications three times a day to the God of heaven, the attention of the princes and rulers was called to his case. He had an opportunity to speak for himself, to show who is the true God, and to present the reason why He alone should receive worship, and the duty of rendering Him praise and homage. And the deliverance of Daniel from the den of lions was another evidence that the Being whom he worshipped was the true and living God." – Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 453.

5.
WHAT DECREE DID DARIUS MAKE THROUGHOUT HIS KINGDOM? Dan. 6:26.

6.

WHAT DID HE SAY THE LIVING GOD DID IN HEAVEN AND IN EARTH? Dan. 6:27.

NOTE --- "The history of Joseph and Daniel is an illustration of what He will do for those who yield themselves to Him, and with the whole heart seek to accomplish His purpose, The greatest want of the world is the want of men – men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall." – Education, page 57.

7.
HOW LONG DID DANIEL PROSPER? Dan. 6:28.

NOTE --- "Honored by men with the responsibilities of state and with the secrets of kingdoms bearing universal sway, Daniel was honored by God as His ambassador, and was given many revelations of the mysteries of ages to come. His wonderful prophecies. . . were not fully understood even by the prophet himself; but before his life-labors closed, he was given the blessed assurance that 'at the end of the days' – in the closing period of this world's history – he would again be permitted to stand in his lot and place. . . As we near the close of this world's history, the prophecies recorded by Daniel demand our special attention, as they relate to the very time in which we are living." – P.K. 547.

Dear Brethren,

Above all I am thanking you for the pamphlets I have been receiving through which I have learnt wonderful gospel for our salvation. It was in 1957 when we got your address from a certain fellow here and we got interested in your teaching that came to us through your literature. There followed a period of silence, when we did not receive any news from you. I was glad to receive some more pamphlets this year, so I am pleased to let you know about my new address as stated above. Besides this I would like to know much about the difference between what you believe and that of the Reform movement which is now established here after the well known S.D.A. movement which has been here for so many years. Thank you once more. May God bless you for the wonderful work you are performing towards us here in Africa by sending us the words of God as interpreted. Yours in the Lord.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SCHOOL:

The Branch Elementary and Junior High School are well under way in this new school year. The students of the junior High classes are being taught new subjects which include – Bookkeeping, Carpentry and Organic Gardening. Preparations are underway for the annual school play for Purim which will be held early next year. (See opposite page for dates for this Feast.)

PRINTING:

With the purchase of an off-set printing machine and several new typewriters which we announced some time ago our printing work has gone ahead in leaps and bounds. In the last five or six months almost a half million pieces of literature have been printed for the camp meeting season. Most of this literature has already been distributed and the results flowing in to the office show that the work was well worth the effort. In view of the demand for increased production, the Office has gone ahead in faith and purchased some more new equipment that will enable us to make our own plates for the printing press. Recently we have begun work on reprinting the Branch literature in booklet form. The first article off the press will be "The Lamb of God" written in 1964, which has been out of print for some time. Other reprints are soon to follow.

ORCHARD:

Plans are underway to expand our New Mt. Carmel orchard. It has been decided to improve our property and increase our food production by putting in an acre of peaches and also an acre of pecans. Other trees of various kinds can be added as means permit. One family living at New Mt. Carmel have felt impressed to purchase some heavy machinery to make the planting of orchards and other gardening projects easier. For this we can truly thank the Lord.

ADDRESSES:

Please continue to send in to the Office the names and addresses of your Adventist and Davidian friends whom you think might like to receive Branch Sabbath School Lessons or tracts. Also we would remind those already on our mailing lists who are planning to move, to please notify us of new addresses as soon as possible. Where applicable, include your Zip-Code. This will help greatly in our work here and will cut down needless expense.
